Real Life Results from Writer's Workshop

Wow!  These kiddos need a round of applause!  During a unit on letter writing Second Graders from Mrs. Miller's class learned that there are many types of correspondence.  There are friendly letters, thank you notes, invitations, business letters, and persuasive letters.   The class was posed with a question,  How can we make Benton better?    Many topics were discussed, but finally the issue decided on was the playground.  The 2nd graders felt that there should be more options, on the blacktop when it was wet and they were unable to be on the playground.  They wrote a class letter to Mrs. Clouse, addressing their concerns.  They gave valid reasons and possible solutions to this problem.  Imagine their surprise when a few days letter, Mrs. Clouse stopped by the class and told them that she totally agreed with their letter.  She handed them some catalogs and gave them a budget to work with.  Talk about real world learning happening!  The students searched the catalogs and found how hard it was to work within a budget.  They also had to pick something that would be safe.  The class voted on getting a basketball goal and Mrs. Clouse threw in some new basketballs as well.  This is a learning experience they will never forget.  Thanks Mrs. Clouse, and thank you Mrs. Miller's Extraordinary Persuasive kids!!!
