Arrival

In the best interest of your child, please plan for him/her to arrive between 7:40 am and 7:55 am. Children who arrive before this time interfere with the class preparation time available to the teacher. A student is considered tardy if he/she arrives after 8:00 am. The student must report to the office and sign in when arriving late.

Attendance

A child's success in school depends on regular attendance. Regular attendance is an important school habit. If a child must be absent for any reason, please call the office on the first day of a child's absence. Unexplained absences totaling more than 10 days total will be considered excessive. Parents will be notified of the need for a conference concerning attendance. After 15 unexplained absences the case will be referred to the county juvenile office.

Procedures For Picking Up Your Child

If it is necessary for a child to leave during the school day, parents must check his/her child out in the office. The child will be called to the office via the intercom. Parents are not to go directly to the class nor wait outside the classroom door. Standing in the hallway outside the classroom doors can be disruptive to the activities within the classroom.

Withdrawals

In case of the withdrawal of a child from school, please notify the office at least one day in advance, by note or telephone. Textbooks and library books must be accounted for and transfer papers must be completed.

School Emergencies

Generally, there are two types of emergencies that could necessitate the closing of school. They are snowstorms and tornadoes or severe weather activity. The directive to close school comes from the office of the Superintendent of Schools. Notice of closing will be broadcast over KMMO Radio (1300 AM, 102.9 FM), KMZU 100.7 FM, KZBK 96.9 FM, KRES 104.7 FM and KZZT 105.5 FM

Emergency Procedures

During the school year we prepare the children for emergency situations by practicing fire, tornado and earthquake drills. We feel as a school we have procedures that will keep us as safe as possible if we would happen to experience any of the disasters mentioned. To help keep calm and organized in an emergency situation, we ask that you follow these guidelines.

  1. Parents or legal guardians only will be allowed to take the children from school only after an all clear has been declared by the proper authorities. (This means we will not allow a child to leave with a neighbor, friend, or sitter).
  2. No children will be allowed to walk or ride their bikes home.
  3. Please do not call the school! (If we do have a line working, we may need that to call for assistance).
  4. If buses are running after the all clear and your child normally rides the bus, your child will be placed on the appropriate bus and sent home.
  5. All teachers and staff will remain with students until they have been picked up.

Please help us by following these simple rules in an emergency. Children usually stay relatively calm in these situations, because we prepare them well. Rest assured that all children will be taken care of until they can safely be released to you the parent.

Telephone

Because of the number of children enrolled in school, no child may use the telephone except for emergencies. It is difficult to accept messages for individual children without interrupting the classroom instructional program. We would appreciate your cooperation in not asking us to deliver a message to an individual child except in an emergency. School telephone numbers are:

(Grade 1) Benton.............886-3993
(Grade 2) Southeast..........886-2655
(Grade 3) Eastwood...........886-7100
(Grade 4) Northwest..........886-2993

Textbooks and Supplies

Textbooks are furnished by the Marshall Public Schools and are distributed by the classroom teacher to all pupils in kindergarten through grade four. Should a textbook become lost or damaged, the student to whom the book is checked out will be held responsible, and will be charged according to the age of the text. Please stress to your child the importance of respect for school material and property. Check frequently to see that your child has supplies such as pencils and paper.

Suspensions

Any child whose conduct continues to be disruptive to the classroom setting after other means of correction have failed, may be suspended by the building principal, who in turn will notify the Superintendent of Schools. The pupil who consistently refuses to follow a teacher's direction or consistently disregards school regulations may be suspended.

Coupled with progress reports are parent-teacher conferences. These conferences are held at the end of the first and third quarters. The purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for parent and teacher to sit down and frankly discuss the educational progress of the students.

Visitors

Because of the number of pupils in each classroom, visiting relatives, friends, and younger brothers and sisters are not allowed to visit school during regular school hours. Parents are encouraged to visit their child's classroom. However, when planning a visitation, please check with the school office prior to the visit in order to avoid any conflict with special schedules. If you need to give your child a message, medication, homework, lunch money, supplies, etc., for the protection of the students, all visitors including parents, please report to the office upon entering and leaving the building. Please do not go directly to the classroom. Interrupting class hampers valuable instruction time. You will be given a visitor's pass at the office when you sign in.

Illness

If a child becomes injured or ill during the school day, the parents will be notified. For this reason, it is vitally important to list an emergency telephone number with the school office, and that this information be kept up-to-date. If the parent cannot be reached, the emergency number will be called. The health and physical well-being of all our students is a matter of great concern to us. For the sake of classmates, children should not be sent to school if they are suffering from headache, fever, or running sores.

Medication

Giving medication to students during school hours shall be discouraged and restricted to necessary medication that cannot be given on an alternative schedule. It should not be necessary to give more than one dose of medication during a 7 hour school day. Your doctor may be able to schedule all doses of medication to be taken at home. Exceptions should be arranged with the school nurse.

Prescription medication will only be administered if in the original bottle/packaging with label affixed by pharmacist/physician. Over the counter medications will only be given if in the original packaging, are appropriate for child's age/weight and no contraindicating conditions exist. Aspirin and products containing aspirin will only be given if accompanied by a physician's order. Please pick up the necessary forms for medication administration from the school nurse. This form must be completed before your child can be given any medication at school.

The administration of medication to a student, when the above conditions have been met, shall be limited to the school nurse or other designated person(s). All medication shall be kept in the nurse's office. The parents/guardians of the student must assume responsibility for informing school personnel of any change in the student's health or change in medication.

School Parties

There are three parties held in your child's class per year, Fall Festival, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. Pupils may provide healthy snacks for their classes in recognition of their birthday. These should be served after 2:00 p.m. Birthdays are celebrated on one day each month.

Out of School Parties

Parents frequently ask permission to send home invitations to birthday and other parties through the schools. We are happy to cooperate when an invitation is extended to every member of the class. When a few children are excluded their feelings are unnecessarily hurt.

Students may ride bicycles to school as long as the parents approve. The school will not accept responsibility for the safety of the bicycles. Locks are recommended as a safety precaution. All bicycles should be registered with the police department and should have a license. Students must walk the bicycle to the rack as soon as they get to the school grounds. Bicycles will be parked for the entire school day. Racks are provided at each building to park bicycles in.

Discipline Plan

The pupils management plan that is adopted by Marshall Elementary Schools is known as the Ozanam BIST model of discipline. Our philosophy is "We accept all children where they are and want them to have a safe learning environment. It is okay for a child to have a problem, but it is not okay for the child to stay stuck there. We will help the child to own responsibility for the problem and to develop a plan to be safe in his/her environment."

Our belief is that all children have the right to learn and if a child's behavior interferes with their ability to learn or another child's ability to learn, then we will help that child develop a plan to take responsibility for his/her actions and solve the problem. Some of the things you will see or hear when you are in our schools:

  • Teachers and staff members smiling and talking one on one with students in a calm, caring manner. They will be listening and trying to get beneath the hurt to the heart of each student.
  • Class meetings where shared decision-making takes place.
  • Teachers offering more choices in the classroom.
  • Students taking ownership of their problems.
  • Teachers providing students with grace and accountability.
  • Students thinking and writing about their choices in a quiet area known as a Safe Spot to complete a Think Sheet.
  • Students being provided the opportunity to go to a Buddy Room to gain control of their emotions.
  • Students being provided the opportunity to go to Recover Area or isolation until they are able to be safe and productive.
  • Students being provided with the opportunity to attend school in an alternative classroom placement until they are able to be in control of themselves in a regular classroom placement.
  • Teachers and students developing plans together.
  • Teachers meeting with students to visualize the way they will handle a problem situation (Triage).
  • Teachers forming partnerships with parents. Communicating often regarding the student's plans.
  • Students with more confidence and increased self-esteem.
