COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
CONSERVATION & NATURAL RESOURCES
ADVANCED CROP/LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
This class is offered to freshmen and sophomore students. They will study
animal breeding, animal nutrition, livestock selection, meat science, leadership,
arc welding, woodworking and careers in agriculture.
Students will be introduced to the FFA and will begin their SAE and record
book training. Each student will develop an individual supervised agricultural
experience program tailored to the needs, desires and career goals of the
student.
This class for 10th grade students will study plant growth and production, soil science, field crops and small grain production. The leadership training will induce public speaking and parliamentary procedure. Shop work will include gas welding and cutting, metal work, woodworking and actual project construction. Students will analyze their SAE from the first year and receive advanced training in record keeping. Prerequisite is Agricultural Science I.
Agriculture Management & Economics
This course is offered to junior and senior students. They will
study business management, profit maximizing principles and marketing. Students
will study agricultural laws and tax policies.
Prerequisite: Agriculture Science I & II. This class is for two (2) semesters
and for one (1) credit and is offered every other year. Class limit is 20
students.
Advanced Crop/Livestock Production
This course is offered to junior and senior students. They will
study advanced areas of corn, soybean, grain sorghum and wheat production.
Marketing of grain crops will be covered. Also, an advanced study of genetics,
reproduction, nutrition, livestock handling, diseases and parasites will be
covered for beef, swine, and sheep species. Marketing of these animals will
also be taught.
Prerequisite: Agricultural Science I & II. Class is for one (1) semester
and for one-half (1/2) credit. This class is offered 2nd semester every other
year. Class limit is 20 students.
Conservation and Natural Resources
This in a one (1) hour course for juniors and seniors with an
interest in conservation and natural resources. The class will prepare students
for activities in the conservation and/or improvement of natural resources
such as oil, water, air, forest, fish, and wildlife for economic and natural
resources such as oil, water, air, forest, fish, and wildlife for economic
and recreational purposes.
Prerequisite: Agricultural Science I & II. This class is for two (2) semesters
and for one (1) credit and is offered every year. Class limit is 20 students.
Agribusiness, Sales, Marketing & Management
This is a one (1) hour course for juniors and seniors designed
to give students a first hand experience with human relations, personal inventory,
careers in sales, and other experiences necessary for employment in agribusiness
engaged in marketing, purchasing and storing, grading, and transporting supplies
and products. Students must be enrolled in this course to enroll in Agriculture
Work.
Prerequisite: Agriculture Science I & II. This class is for two (2) semesters
and for one (1) credit and is offered every year. Class limit is 20 students.
This is a one (1) hour course for juniors and seniors designed
to introduce students to electrical wiring, concrete, plumbing and sewage
disposal, farm fences, and construction of farm buildings.
Prerequisite: Agricultural Science I & II. This class is for two (2) semesters
and for one (1) credit and is offered every year. Class limit is 20 students.
Agricultural Construction I & II (Welding & Metals)
This course is offered to junior and senior students. This course is designed for the construction of medium to large size metal projects. The student will be instructed in the use of arc, mig, tig, oxy-acetylene welding, cutting and metal fabrication. Students will be given the opportunity to use these skills in project construction. This course is for one or two years for two (2) or three (3) credits. Students with a “C” average and 95% attendance who complete this course will have the opportunity to join the Iron Workers Union in Kansas City with advanced apprenticeship standing. Class limit is 16.
Horticulture/Greenhouse Operation & Management
This course is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. This class is a combination of classroom and laboratory activities related to the production of floriculture plants in a greenhouse environment. Subject matter areas include all aspects of plant propagation, growth, development and marketing. Greenhouse activities include the production of a wide range of floriculture crops such as poinsettias, foliage plants and annual bedding plants. Students who have completed Agricultural Science I & II may receive one (1) unit of Biological Science credit. This course is for two (2) semesters and for one (1) credit. Class limit is 14.
Horticulture/Landscaping Principles & Practices
This course is offered to juniors and seniors. It is designed for individuals interested in the landscape industry. Student study the basic principles of landscape designs as well as the methods of installation and maintenance of trees, shrubs, ground covers, bedding plants and turf grasses. Also included are units on interior landscaping and floral design. Greenhouse activities include the production of plants suitable for booth interior and exterior landscape projects. This course is for two (2) semesters and for one (1) credit. Class limit is 14.
This course is offered to juniors and seniors. This course includes
the production, arrangement, and retailing of flowers. Included should be
fresh, silk, or dried flowers from which corsages, wedding bouquets, table
flower arrangements, and seasonal holiday decorations will be made. This course
is for two (2) semesters and for one (1) credit. Class limit is 14.
