In 1994, the Marshall School District established a
unique program for students: Satellite Day School Program. The purpose
was to create a more intense instructional learning environment for
IEP students experiencing great difficulty in controlling their behavior
in the classroom. It has grown and changed over the years. Satellite
remaining true to its purpose now also includes regular education students
and suspended out-of-school students. When attending the Satellite Program
during suspensions, students are able to complete class assignments
and receive credit for work completed. They may also use on-line curriculum
"Plato" and receive credit in their classroom for these completed
assignments. This has cut down tremendously on grade retentions and
the high school drop out rate. The Satellite Program is a proactive programming
approach for small group and individualized instruction, which has produced
many positive outcomes for students served.
