November 2011

Unit 2 Reading includes the following titles: Mighty Jackie, My Diary From Here to There, Stealing Beauty, Ben Franklin, and Dear Mr. Winston. Comprehension, author's purpose, poetry patterns, parts of a book, singular/plural nouns and possessive nouns are a few of the skills incorporated into our reading lessons. Remember to practice fluency with the booklet that was sent home early this year.

I continue to be impressed with the progress students are making with our new Saxon math program. The cumulative nature of math assignments is helping students to practice and retain skills. Measurement has been a big part of the past few lessons and multiplication/division skills are increasing in frequency. We made multiplication flashcards earlier this year that your child should have brought home. Working at home for 10-15 minutes each night on memorization of facts will make a big difference for your child's success. There are several math websites on our classroom webpage that will help as well.

Missouri regions is the current research topic in Social Studies. We have been working on the basics of research note-taking while learning the 5 regions of Missouri, their landforms, major cities and natural resources. We will use Microsoft Word and Paint to create a finished project.

Mrs. Lewis reports that the Book Fair was a big success during parent-conference week. Thanks to all of you who stopped by and shopped with or for your children. In March, we will be taking an exciting field trip to the Children's Literature Festival in Warrensburg. During spring conferences we hope to enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free Book Fair.

A big THANK YOU goes out to all of you who sent or brought treats to our Fall/Halloween party. We had a great time and enjoyed a feast of treats. Room Moms, thank you for your planning and organization of this event. We appreciate you!

On November 11, we will be participating in the Veterans Tribute at the Saline County Courthouse. We have been working hard to memorize our Veteran songs in music. Mrs. Wessley will lead us in singing during this important ceremony.
