Mrs. Stock's second grade students had to design a hat that would protect them from desert like conditions. The students had to pretend that their boat crashed on a hot deserted island. The only supplies that survived the crash were 1 paper plate, 1 paper towel, 1 piece of foil, 1 paper lunch sack, a 3 foot piece of yarn, and 2 clothespins for each student. They first had to learn all about how different materials have different properties. Then they had to test each material for sturdiness, softness, and absorbancy before they could start their design.
