Northwest 3rd and 4th Graders talked about snow and ice removal this month in STEM.  3rd Graders discussed winter weather, what causes weather, and what a meteorologist does.  Both teams studied the importance of our city snowplow system and our MODOT workers.  We were visited by a veteran MODOT driver, Mr. Wright.  It was great to visit with him and hear first hand what has to be done during our winter weather events.  3rd Graders built snow shovels that would scoop the most snow.  They also tried out the shovels in different kinds of “snow” to check the effectiveness.  4th Graders tested different substances to melt ice the fastest.  They tried salt, sand, kitty litter, and sugar.  It was an interesting fact that our professional ice and snow removers use beet juice mixed with salt as well.  It was a great day of learning!!
