Eastwood Students Truckin’ Along with STEAM

This year on 12:30 early dismissals for the first Wednesday of the month, Eastwood students will be participating in STEAM activities.  STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

On September 6th, students worked on effective communication skills while collaborating with a partner to build a representation of what they’d both seen in a photograph.  Partners were shown two different pictures of a truck, one being a small pick-up truck and the other being a semi-truck.  Partners took turns describing their pictures.   Compromises were made, and building of a truck commenced.  Lego’s were provided for students to use to build their truck.  After building, students reflected.  They drew a quick sketch of the truck they’d created with their partner, and then wrote about their experience.  It was a wonderful experience to see that no two trucks looked alike.  The conversations, and ultimately compromises, swirling about the truck’s features were interesting.  Ingenuity surfaced when desired Lego pieces and parts were not available.
