Penguin Parade

Wednesday, February 7th, Eastwood students plunged into penguins for their STEM activity.  Third and fourth graders worked with a partner to research a specific species of penguin.  Science terms such as predator and prey were used while gathering information.  After collecting facts, students measured out enough paper to create a life-sized penguin.  The penguins were cut, colored, and stuffed with newspapers to make them more life-like.  In addition to researching and creating a penguin, students also were able to experience the importance of a penguin’s blubber.  Blubber mitts, or plastic bags filled with Crisco, served as insulation against the frigid water around Antarctica.
