concert

Thursday, March 9th, will offer local residents the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular display of talent and musicianship at Bueker Middle School.  The Marshall High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Sara Summers, will share the stage with the highly acclaimed touring concert band from Central Methodist University, directed by Roy D. “Skip” Vandelicht, Jr.

This free concert will be held in the Harold L. Lickey Auditorium at Bueker Middle School and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Nationwide, March is annually declared  “Music In Our Schools Month” and this concert will definitely exemplify the excellence, dedication, and passion that students and music educators celebrate all year long.

The Marshall High School Jazz Band will open the concert with some energized and classic Count Basie “swing style” selections as well as a smooth, Latin samba featuring high school junior, Trevan Jolliff on trombone.

The Central Methodist University Concert Band will then take the stage and perform several selections from their annual band tour repertoire. This year marks the final semester for Prof. Vandelicht to lead the CMU Band as he will retire later this spring. He has directed the CMU bands since 2008, after first completing 31 years as the band director of the Fayette R-III School District. Among his many accolades, Vandelicht was inducted into the Missouri Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 2020 and continues to be an active clinician, adjudicator and conductor for bands throughout the Mid-West.

The Marshall High School Band program proudly boasts two  alumni currently performing in the Central Methodist University Concert Band: Jaxson Grossenburg (trombone) and Cory Edmonds (string bass), both of the graduating MHS Class of 2021. Marshall High School band director, Sara Summers, comments, “There is no greater joy than to see your former students continuing to make music playing in college ensembles. It is the ultimate testament that music is a life-long activity that enriches lives forever.”
